Select Luco Service
After choosing your flight and filling in your basic details, simply select the LuCo service from the additional options panel. Add your luggage pick-up and drop-off locations to customize your experience. Once you complete your purchase, a confirmation email with all the necessary details, including a tracking code and your scheduled pick-up time, will be sent to you, ensuring you’re informed every step of the way.

Luggage pickup
An electric vehicle will pick up your luggage within the specified time window—check our app for the exact time. Our driver will weigh and scan your luggage to comply with travel regulations. After the check, your luggage is locked with a secure electronic code only accessible to you via our app, ensuring its safety. We handle all labeling and prepare your bags for their onward journey.

Enjoy your travel day! Without the need to manage your bags, you can afford to arrive at the airport later and travel with ease. Say goodbye to the hassle of hauling your luggage and keeping tabs on it.

KLM wants to deliver the best service in aviation for you. LUCO allows KLM to be more flexible with its logistics and therefore enables KLM to decrease it’s delays. With LUCO KLM has a unique baggage handling system in the aviation industry which is yet another way in which KLM stands out in the market. For each 20 KG bag that is transported with LUCO instead of checked in KLM saves €4,18 * on kerosine costs.

With LUCO KLM helps to reach the Sustainable Development Goal 9 and 11 of the UN. The road to greener aviation: less CO2 emissions, for an average flight there is a reduction of 2.0 tonnes of CO2e* if every traveller would make use of LUCO instead of checked-in bags. Luggage free cities mean less nuisance of tourists in the metro and on the streets.

CO2 reduction
* For every suitcase transported with LUCO 10,2 kg CO2 are saved. Saved CO2 emissions are based on average flight statistics. The total amount of passengers divided by the total amount of flown kilometres. The flight distance to Barcelona is 1500 km and the ‘average’ flight distance is 1930 km.

Less delays
One of the reasons a flight can be delayed is baggage handling, due to the many steps luggage takes at the airport and the timeconsuming (un)loading when the airplane is at the dock. Sometimes all the luggage needs to be reorganised. Therefore LUCO helps preventing delays.

Public transport to the airport
Without the hassle of suitcases it gets easier to take the public transport to the airport. Other travellers are less annoyed when tourists don't have heir suitcases.

3 hubs
There are 3 luggage hubs, first all luggage is collected at Schiphol, sorted for Paris/Barcelona and London/Dublin. In Paris and London there is another hub where the luggage to Barcelona and Dublin will travel further. Just like a connected flight.

Saving fuel costs
The fuel that is saved by each luggage item transported via LUCO is saving €4,18 on kerosine costs, based on average flight statistics. For this average flight distance of 1930km, the cost of electricity for an electric bus are €2,08. Based on €0,25 per kWh (CBS, 2023) and 3,83 km per kWh, based on the WLTP for the Mercedes eSprinter, and an average load of 60 suitcases (max. capacity is 85).

Sustainable development goal 9 of the United Nations is: "Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation." LUCO is helping to make the aviation industry more sustainable and stands for an "increased resource efficiency" (9.4).

Sustainable development goal 11 of the United Nations is: "Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable." With less suitcases in public transport the accessibility and safety of the public transport for people in vulnerable situations rises. (11.2)

Sorting system
At Schiphol Airport we have a luggage sorting system that sorts all your bags to get on the right bus. If bags do need to get on a plane, we can immediately put it in the larger luggage system and we collect bags from the larger system from connecting flights. This is all based on our experience with digital ecosystems for transporting people and luggage.

The service of LUCO comes with a cost, to collect all suitcases and deliver them is expensive, but the saved fuel and CO2 emissions are important for KLM. The three days that LUCO has for the whole process enables KLM to combine many suitcases in one ride and reduce costs. Therefore the overall price of LUCO is similar to a regular checked-in bag. The fast service (which can be done within one day) is more expensive. For LUCO KLM works with dynamic pricing, this means that the early birds will get their luggage service cheaper than travellers that book late.

A collaboration with PostNL can be the next step in a more efficient collecting process. PostNL would pick up the suitcases when delivering parcels and bring them to the hub at Schiphol.
